In 1995, Coach Jim Harris entertained the idea of honoring past Pioneers for their athletic accomplishments, as well as providing a vehicle to develop a scholarship for graduating Pioneer athletes.
The Committee’s original goal was to build the funds in an endowment with the hope of presenting the first scholarship in 2001. However, after five years of hard work and the generosity of Pioneer’s family members and supporters, we were able to present the first scholarship in the Spring of 2000.
The scholarship began as a 4-year, $500 per year award and has increased to $1500 per semester for 4 years. The guidelines for the selection process require that the applicant be: 1. participated in SHS athletics, 2. a student leader, 3. have an outstanding GPA, 4. display a great sense of “Pioneer Pride”, and 5. demonstrate that he/she will benefit from the scholarship.
Each year on the Saturday morning following the Stillwater High School football homecoming game, a Memorial Induction Ceremony takes place at the high school honoring 6 former Pioneers. A friend of each inductee tells of his/her “Pioneer Pride” and all the attributes which made them special. The athletes are honored with a plaque in their memory which is given to their family, a preserved written record of their contributions in life, and an inscription of their name on a permanent plaque displayed in a place of honor.
Occasionally, a special award called the “Distinguished Service Award” is presented to a non-athlete who has given greatly to Stillwater High School athletics.
